What is the best pet for my 5 year old son with asthma besides cats or dogs?

Crystal S asked:

My son is terribly upset that we recently had to give our cat away due to his asthma and we can’t have dogs. He has been asking for a snake. We haven’t owned one before, but he has held and experienced the feeding process with my sisters baby red tail boa. I’m still unsure about this and would love any suggestions regarding first pet snakes or other pets for my son. (I know snakes live 10-25 years and any pet will be my responsibility not his)

honestly, I would just get him some fish. A five year old can learn how much to feed his fish. I wouldn’t get a snake for him until he was older.

If he’s allergic to cats he’ll be allergic to rabbits and ferrets as well. How does he do with small furry animals like rats? They make great pets and live about 5 years.

A bird would not be interactive enough, and he’s too young to be gentle with a tarantula. That leaves lizards (fragile!) and snakes. Or turtles, but they carry salmonella quite often, which is a danger with small children.

Any type of low maintenance reptile would be good, Frogs are hard to take care, heating them keeping it humid, if you live in a warm state! Then a frog may be good. Or maybe the water frogs that do not leave the water, i had one of those when i was younger. THey do also have hairless cats and dogs, i dont find them attractive looking, but if he loves cats that may be a way to go also. Geckos are easy. So are salamanders, you can hold them, and they are quite calm. They Dont run all over the place. Or any type of lizard.
