What are some tips of living with asthma?

asthma
2gthr4vr asked:

I have asthma, and its not that bad. This spring seems to be its worse. I also have seasonal allergies so both of them together, are not a good mix. What are some things I can do to help my asthma? I already have medicine, etc. and I also have an air filter. What else can I do or get, i.e a humidifier or dehumidifier, etc. Thanks!!
Also, website sources are GREAT!

If you have an inhaler make sure you use a spacer ( reference below ) Breath DEEPLY in through the nose and out through the mouth. I know it sounds silly but it works… I’ve had asthma since I was 8! Just this year I developed allergies. It’s been horrible. Nasal/ Sinus Washes Are AWESOME! (reference also below ) the second reference is from National Jewish. I went to the hospital run school for a year when I was diagnosed with severe asthma! It’s an awesome school. Check out their website you might find some awesome info. Also if you get headaches like my because of your allergies, the nasal washes will help with that!

What kind of medicine are you on?
Do you know what kind of asthma you have?
Do you know what induces or triggers your asthma attacks?

For me, I have moderately severe asthma which is triggered by excersize and pollen (allergies). For emergencies, I use an albuterol inhaler.

One thing that has worked AMAZINGLY for me is the prescription steroid Asthmanex. As I mentioned, before I’ve experienced moderate to severe symptoms, and after I began taking this (about a month ago), I’ve had hardly any trouble at all. Usually, I’m sick all the time, but I haven’t been sick once since I started. Also, I’ve noticed a significant increase in my lung function and capacity.

I don’t mean to advocate for them, but this drug has seriously done miracles for me. I’d google it first to see if you think it might be a good fit for you, then ask your doctor about it. If your asthma is as bad as mine, it’s worth a shot though.

I have a humidifier at my bedside year round and it makes a huge difference in my breathing. Don’t sleep with the windows open - then you’re breathing in the pollen filled air all night. You may need to adjust your seasonal allergy medication for the times you’re most sensitive (spring or spring and fall). You may have to start a nasal spray like rhinocort or flonase. Perhaps start Advair during those sensitive months. You’re doing good with the air filter.
