How can you get asthma after not having it for 16 years?

nancylolz asked:

I am 16 and last night I went to the ER for breathing problems I was having. After they did xrays, I was told I have asthma. How can I go so long without having it, and then get it?

You can develop it when you get older especially if you had ezema or allergies as child. Asmtha is ezema on the inside of the lungs. You can also get a form of it if you’re a heavy smoker

Good question. Young girls around your age start to develop body fat at a higher rate and percentage then boys. “Fat” cells are not asthma friendly. It may be that you have had extremely mild asthma all your life, maybe even had a “cold” or chest infection that was actually asthma. And now your getting older and it’s getting worse.

Studies show that young boys have it worse then girls and teenage girls have asthma worse then teen boys.

Have your family doctor send you for a pulmonary function test with bronchial challenge. This is the gold standard test for asthma. If you have it, learn as much as you can about the disease. An asthmatic can do anything a non asthmatic can do if it is properly controlled.

Good luck

It never went away. Asthma was in your system, lying dormant. Now, it is showing itself, again. You need to carry an emergency inhaler, if nothing else. (Mine was ’silent’ for about 20 years, and suddenly became a life and death situation for me).
