Are there any good home remedies for asthma out there?
all asked:
I have pretty bad asthma and just had 2 visits to the E.R. last night. A variety of things triggered my attacks this time. Scary stuff. I am on a number of meds. for it, but wondering some good home remedies I could try. TY!
Steering clear of stressful situations isn’t going to happen…I have 7 children!! :0) No smoking here either. That would be the worst thing I could do!

- Steer clear of smoking and smokers
- Keep your house clean (cuts back on dust)
- Try to stay away from stressful situations as much as possible
- Keep your fluids up (well, I always had to do that)
- Minimize temperature extremes

Vacuum regularly - and keep dust down around the home - vacuum your bed and change the sheets regularly. House dust mites can be a problem. Don’t smoke obviously, avoid passive smoking. Avoid all fumes especially diesel fumes. A minimalist look to you house - no dust collectors may be a good idea. Stress will trigger attacks - and it’s scary as you say - so produces more stress. It’s a vicious circle - try to break that vicious circle by doing something that helps you relax. Counselling or hypnotherapy may help.

See the book by Dr. John R. Christopher called “school of natural healing”. He has a story about a man who had not been able to lie down in a bed or work for thirty years due to severe asthma who was healed with lobelia, but do NOT attempt this remedy without reading the exact instructions and be sure to drink several cups of peppermint tea before taking the lobelia.

You should avoid allergens, stop smoking stay away from second hand smoke…. older people tell me they drink hot coffee during an attack and it helps…

If you had two vists to the ER last night, i wouldn’t worry about home remedies at this point. You already know that NOTHING will replace your rescue inhaler. That is your lifeline, never let it run empty or leave your side.
The only home remedy i know is elevating the head of your bed and coffee will help a MINOR attack in a pinch. If you’re on a number of meds, then coffee will not help you at all. Elevating the head of the bed might make sleeping a little easeir, but will offer only minimal relief.
If you’re really serious, you could take out all carpeting, hire a maid to clean for you (do not dust or vaccuum because it exposes you to allergens - have somebody else do it when you’re not home), get HEPA filters for the rooms that you’re in, close all your windows to avoid outside triggers, and eliminate all house pets.
Are you seeing a pulmonologist? A specialist who deals with lung disorders? This doctor would be much more knowledgeable than a regular family doctor. Wish you the best.
